Steering towards Safety:
Evaluating & Rehabilitating Senior & Impaired Drivers

People we help

SimFit2Drive is a screening tool for assessment of drivers which primarily assists groups of people that are more vulnerable in everyday traffic – and the clinicians who work with them.

Elderly drivers

Due to the effect on functional skills such as cognition, perception and reaction times, aging appears to be associated with decreased driving skills and increased traffic accidents. Finding ways on how to prolong independence while increasing driving safety can be challenging but is a crucial task.

Impaired drivers

Due to cognitive disorders, similar decline in driving performance seen in elderly drivers can be detected also in the neurologically impaired, which in a dynamic environment such as driving, can have significant consequences not only individually but also for the wider society.

Assessment

SimFit2Drive seamlessly integrates cognitive and physical assessment tests, extending driving fitness assessments to near real-world, on-road scenarios. This novel approach enriches traditionally one-dimensional tests by enabling assessors to gauge patients’ compensatory mechanisms for various impairments.

Clinicians and assessors can establish tailored baselines and employ objective, meticulously documented measurements, ensuring a higher degree of consistency, fairness, and safety in assessments. The system also permits quantitative tracking of patients’ progress or deterioration over time.

Moreover, SimFit2Drive automates report generation, presenting results in a clear and visually intuitive format. This not only facilitates comprehension for clinicians but also simplifies the explanation to the patients, promoting effective communication in the medical evaluation process.

Training

Comprehensive cognitive and physical training has been shown to be efficient for enhancing memory and other abilities in aged individuals with and without cognitive decline. SimFit2Drive can be used as vital step in preventing or reducing the severity an impairment has on driving performance.

It can also help elderly drivers to learn and practice novelties on the road in a safe environment. The road infrastructure is constantly changing and evolving to accommodate the constantly increasing number of vehicles on the road. This brings a lot of new and challenging situations, which can be more demanding to elderly drivers and drivers with a neurological impairment. SimFit2Drive offers a diverse driving environment, which can be used for training performance and as a learning tool for novelties on the road – all while training functional cognitive and sensory-motor skills.

Rehabilitation

For numerous patients, resuming driving is a paramount objective in their rehabilitation journey. Employing a diverse range of scenarios, we can facilitate goal-oriented rehabilitation within a familiar yet stimulating environment.

Simulations play a pivotal role in ensuring patients regain the ability to drive safely and confidently. Unlike on-road rehabilitation, they offer the flexibility to create a wide array of scenarios and conditions tailored to individual needs. These scenarios can be finely tuned to target specific areas of impairment, thus expediting progress in those particular areas.

Furthermore, SimFit2Drive offers the flexibility to adapt the vehicle configuration to each driver’s unique needs. This enables the selection of the most suitable adaptation and allows patients to practice using these adaptations safely and at their preferred pace, fostering a more effective rehabilitation process.
